The Anglo-Australasian Lawyers Society

I am from Australia/New Zealand.  How do I get to work in the UK as a lawyer?

It is best for any foreign qualified person seeking to work in the UK to contact the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) explaining their own personal circumstances and asking for the appropriate paperwork.

The SRA's website and the appropriate regulations are found at http://www.sra.org.uk/solicitors/qltt.page.

Some firms may be willing to employ Australian/New Zealand lawyers without taking the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) but enquiries should be made at the firm in question as to their policy in this regard.

Many employer firms under certain conditions may agree to sponsor individuals in their studies leading up to qualification.

Subject to any rights to settle any Australian or New Zealand lawyer may have by virtue of their family history it will be necessary to obtain a work permit which will be applied for by the employer firm.  The rules are changing in connection with this so it is best to speak to your employer firm with regard to the requirements.
